Defection Hits PDP In The National Assembly

Two members of the House of Representatives formerly in the People's Democratic Party have defected to the All Progressives Congress.

One of the defectors; member representing Okene/Ogorimagongo federal constituency of Kogi State  in the National Assembly, Hon Yusuf AHmed Tijani said the interest of his people was no longer protected under the PDP.

In his letter of defection as read by the Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon Yakubu Dogara on the floor of the House on Thursday, 5th October, 2017, Hon Tijani cited factionalisation in the People's Democratic Party as one of his reasons for defecting from the PDP to the APC.

“The house is aware of factional crisis rocking the PDP and all efforts to put the party in order seemed fruitless. The interest of my people which I am here to represent and protect supersedes all other interests”

The Minority Whip raised a point of order, citing Section 68 of the Constitution and saying those who defected ought to vacate their seats but the Speaker, Hon Yakubu Dogara overruled his point of order noting the right to defect or not was a matter to be determined by the court when necessary.

Speaker Dogara also read a letters of defection from Hon. Bitrus Jisalo representing the Municipal/Bwari Federal Constituency  of the Federal Capital Territory from PDP to APC while citing the leadership crisis that bedeviled the opposition PDP recently for his defection.
