Judge orders flogging of labourer for phone theft


An Upper Sharia Court sitting in Daura Road, KadunaSatte, on Friday, ordered that a 19-year-old labourer, Anas Umar, be given 20 strokes of the cane for stealing a Nokia phone valued N4,000.

Umar, a resident of No 7, Magajin Aska Kabala Costain, Kaduna State, was convicted after pleading guilty to a one-count charge of the theft.

The judge, Alhaji Aminu Jumare, gave the order after the convict pleaded guilty and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

He said that the court might not be lenient with him next time he appeared before it.

Jumare also ordered the convict to pay N4, 200 as cost of the stolen phone and cash.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp Shehu Abdullahi, had told the court that the matter was reported by Beauty Peter of Kaje Street, Kakuri in Kaduna, at the Sabon Gari Police Station, on Jan. 28.

According to Abdullahi, the convict, on that same day, entered the shop of Beauty Peter located at Kugo New Extension and stole her Nokia phone valued N4, 000 and a cash sum of N200.

He stated that when the convict was arrested, he confessed to have sold the said phone to one Hassan Liman of the same address now at large.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 271 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
