Post-Legislative Scrutiny; An important tool for effective legislation – Kogi Deputy Speaker
Deputy Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Honorable Ahmed Mohammed has said that Post – Legislative Scrutiny (PLS) is one important tool that must be adopted to ensure effective legislation across the country.
Speaking at the legislative seminar organized by the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies – NILDS with the theme: Strengthening the impact of laws in Nigeria through Post-Legislative scrutiny, he opined that, Post Legislative Scrutiny will enable lawmakers to see if there had been unintended consequences in the course of implementing whatever law that might have been passed, so that they can take steps to address those consequences.
The Deputy Speaker who represented the Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Prince Mathew Kolawole in his remarks for adoption of PSL, said as state legislators and within their network, they will gladly subscribe into this and hopefully collaborate with others to achieve it.
His words; “In Kogi state, we have been able to make some laws establishing institutions, and we are making sure that all necessary mechanisms are in place to checkmate, monitor and oversee it’s smooth running. The law for the rights of people with disability is assented to, and we have begin implementation. The Kogi State Youth Development Commission is also been implemented to the latter and we have partner with Civil Society Organisations like ActionAid for smooth implementation. We also passed the VAPP Bill in Kogi State to ensure that commensurate justice is done in violence against persons and rights be protected”.
“We will continue to collaborate with states, National Assembly, CSOs and relevant stakeholders to ensure that our laws are working, has direct impact and are reviewed where necessary” he concluded.
