Federal Government Should Consider Funding NBC – Fanwo
The Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo has charged the National Broadcasting Commission to put in place a legislative framework that will ensure government funding of the Commission so as to reduce pressure on broadcast organisations.
Fanwo made this call at the NBC meeting with industry stakeholders in Kano, Monday, saying a regulator such as the NBC should receive “significant funding from the Federal Government”.
“NBC has performed excellently in regulating the industry and ensuring sanity in the broadcast industry and should be greatly commended for that. The nation would have gone into flames without the effective regulatory framework of the NBC. I urge the Commission to maintain its eagle eye on the industry and make it even better.
“However, it is time the commission put in place a legislative framework that will ensure adequate funding from the Government. This is key to the financial health of the Commission as the nation struggles to get her balance after the well intended removal of fuel subsidy. It has become clear that broadcast stations in the country can no longer take the sole responsibility of funding NBC”.
Earlier, the Director General of the NBC, Mallam Bello Shehu Ilelah charged broadcast organizations to be up to date with their licence renewal so as not to have them revoked by the Commission.
He said the Commission has also come up with payment plans that will make payment convenient for all the broadcast stations in the country.
The meeting was attended by Information Commissioners from all the 19 Northern States as well as Heads of broadcast stations in Northern Nigeria.
