Gov Ododo Lays Foundation for First Ever Barefoot Renewable Energy College »

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo on Saturday joined the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, to perform the groundbreaking ceremony for the Barefoot Renewable Energy Academy at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Osara, Kogi State. This novel and unprecedented project aims to teach skills in renewable energy, transition from focil fuel to renewable energy amongst others.

Governor Ododo in his address described the project as groundbreaking, people-centered initiative aimed at sustainable development, adding that it is the first of its kind designed to be scaled nationally.

The governor stated that the academy would provide urban and remote rural households with sustainable solar electricity, contributing to reduced poverty, decent work, economic growth, reduced inequalities, and quality education.

Governor Ododo emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to fulfilling his campaign promises through this project.

He expressed optimism that the academy would also address energy scarcity, promote clean and renewable energy, and empower marginalized communities, with a particular focus on gender equality.

In his speech, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, praised the project and described it as a crucial step toward innovation and addressing the manpower gap.

He announced that the Energy Commission would establish a Renewable Energy Center in Kogi State as part of President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.

According to the minister, the academy will provide youths with skills in solar, wind, and other renewable energy technologies, with strong support from state and local communities.

Prof. Abdurrahman Asipita, Vice Chancellor of CUSTECH, commended Governor Ododo for bringing significant projects to the university, noting that this is the second federal project undertaken there.

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, said that the academy, the first of its kind in Africa, is aimed at driving innovation in renewable energy.

Dr. Wemi Jones, Commissioner for Education, also praised the project, citing Kogi State’s commitment to education with 30% of its budget allocated to the education sector, exceeding UNESCO recommendations.
