Speech by Distinguished Senator Abubakar Sadiku Ohere FNSE on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary

Distinguished fellow Nigerians, and cherished citizens of Kogi State,

Today, as we celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, we reflect on the courage and sacrifices of our past heroes—those who dedicated their lives to the noble cause of nation-building.

Their legacy is one of resilience and unity, paving the way for the democracy we cherish today. It is their vision and tenacity that inspire us to continue striving for a better Nigeria.

As we honor our heroes, I also recognize the challenges we currently face under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The recent economic reforms—removing subsidies and floating the naira—have indeed placed immense pressure on many of our citizens, as we all laboured hard to put foods on our tables. I want to assure you that I fully understand the hardship this transition has brought.

Change is never easy, but we must remain steadfast in our belief that these reforms are crucial for our economic future.

I am assuring you today not just as a leader, but as a fellow Nigerian who shares in your struggles and aspirations. Despite the immediate difficulties, I urge you to look towards a brighter future. These reforms are aimed at laying a foundation for sustainable growth, creating jobs for our teeming youth, and ensuring a more secure future for generations to come. Notwithstanding,
the path may be steep, but the rewards will be profound.

In this moment of reflection, I extend my heartfelt greetings to former Governor Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello. His contributions to Kogi State’s development, particularly in infrastructure and human capital, are commendable. He has laid significant groundwork that our current governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, is building upon. Kogi State’s history would indeed be incomplete without acknowledging the pivotal role of Alhaji Bello as the father of modern Kogi State, for empowering our youth and instilling hope in our governance.

I also want to take this opportunity to applaud Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his impressive achievements within less than a year in office. His focus on security, agriculture, and the prompt payment of workers’ salaries and pensioners’ arrears speak volumes about his commitment to the welfare of our people.

I am not surprised whatsoever that he is performing excellently well,of course when a lion gives forth to a cub it’s expected to hunt. This is someone that has over the years been drinking water from the political pot of former governor, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello.

I urge the people of Kogi State to continue supporting him in his endeavors, for together we can achieve the greatness our state deserves.

This our nation’s 64th independence should be a reminder to us that it is our collective responsibility to forge ahead; uniting in our purpose and supporting one another through these transformative times. Together, we can honor our past, embrace our present, and build a future that reflects the dreams of our forebearers.

Thank you, and happy Independence Day to Nigeria!
