FCE Okene Seeks Partnership With Host Community on Environmental Cleanliness

The management of Federal College of Education, Okene has called on residents of its host community to collaborate with the institution in promoting a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment.

The appeal was made by the Chairman of the College’s Environmental Task Force Committee, Mr. Patrick Ushie, on behalf of the Provost, Dr. Ibrahim Mosimabale, during an environmental sensitization effort in Okene, Kogi State.

Ushie expressed concern over what he described as the growing trend of indiscriminate dumping of refuse around the perimeter fence of the institution, noting that the practice poses serious environmental and public health concerns.

According to him, the refuse dumps serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, reptiles, and other harmful organisms capable of endangering the health of residents and members of the College community.

He further warned that with the rainy season already setting in, poorly managed waste could be washed into drainage channels, causing blockages and increasing the likelihood of flooding in surrounding areas.

The College management also disclosed plans to launch a series of environmental sustainability initiatives aimed at improving sanitation within the institution and neighboring communities.

The proposed initiatives, according to the management, will include environmental awareness campaigns, tree planting exercises, and the evacuation of existing refuse dumps around the College environment.

While appealing for the understanding and cooperation of community members, the management stressed that environmental regulations would be strictly enforced, warning that individuals found violating sanitation laws would face appropriate sanctions.

The institution reiterated its commitment to environmental sustainability and urged all stakeholders to contribute towards building a cleaner and healthier society.
