Residents commend Bello for Lightening up Lokoja Streets

Residents of Lokoja, the Kogi State Capital have commended Governor Yahaya Bello for providing streets lights that lightened up the confluence city at night, InsideStory reports.

All the streets in Lokoja, our reporter gathered, were lightened up from nightfall to dawn by solar powered street lights that were provided by Governor Bello’s administration.

On assuming office in January 2016, the Kogi Governor reportedly discarded all the existing old model streets lights that adorned the township roads from Ganaja village to Ganaja junction, from Lokongoma Phase 2 to Paparanda Square, and from Natako Junction to Marine Headquarters; and replaced them with solar powered street lights.

Residents who spoke with our reporter Tuesday in Lokoja, thanked Governor Bello for the gesture and urged him to continue in his developmental drives. Abubakar Obaje, a Tuke Tuke tricycle (Keke) driver told InsideStory in Phase 2 that he was delighted with the streets lights, saying, “apart from brightening up the town at night, the lights have also taken hoodlums off the streets. They have no hiding place again.”

In the same vein, Corporal Usman Oiza of the Nigerian Police Force claimed that the lights had enhanced the security of Lokoja, adding that “Since the streets are illuminated with these lights, report of motorbikes, phones and bags snatching have reduced to the barest minimum.”

Other residents that were also interviewed on the issued expressed happiness and begged the Governor to extend the streets lights to the outskirt of Lokoja like Zango and Ganaja village that were yet to be covered.

Efforts to reach the State Commissioner for Works and Housing, Hon. Sadiq Abdulmumin, to get his position on the residents’ request proved abortive as his phone was out of reach as at press time. An official in his office, who confided in InsideStory, said the streets lights projects are in batches. The few areas in the city that are not covered will be covered before the end of the year.”
