“Construct Additional Dams to Tackle Flooding Challenges” Kogi Urges FG

The Federal Government has been urged to undertake the construction of dams to mitigate the inflow of water from the Benue and River Niger, thereby addressing the annual flooding that impacts states in the riverine areas.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo made the appeal during a meeting with officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) at the Government House in Lokoja today.

Represented by Deputy Comrade Joel Salifu, the Governor highlighted President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the progress of the state and emphasized the federal government’s capacity and political will to construct additional dams to tackle the challenges brought about by flood.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo also called on the Federal Government to undertake the dredging of the River Niger and Benue to safeguard the states in the riverine areas from flood disasters.

He commended President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and NEMA for their swift response to flood disasters, affirming that the state government will continue to provide essential support to those affected by the floods.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Subaidu Umar, pledged to collaborate with the state government to manage the impact of the flood-related disasters in the state. She emphasized the urgent need for attention in Kogi State, particularly in the communities in the riverine areas, and expressed gratitude for the warm reception extended by the Governor.

The Commissioner of Education, Hon. Wemi Jones, described the flood disaster in Kogi State as alarming, noting its adverse effects on schools in the state.

Similarly, the Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mr. Muktar Atima, appealed to the federal government, philanthropic individuals, and international donors to assist the state, highlighting that the devastation caused by the flood within a short period surpasses the state government’s capacity to address.
