Corps Member Champions Girl Child Empowerment in Lokoja »

In an effort to inspire and uplift young girls in Kogi State, corps member Toluwaloju Victoria Oluwatosin (KG/24B/0206) has unveiled The Future Forward Project. An ambitious initiative designed to equip secondary school girls with vital life skills, career mentorship, and menstrual health education. Through her dedication, the project has already impacted over 400 students and aims to reach 1,000 girls by its conclusion.

The project began with sensitization programs at Crowther Memorial School and Government Girls Secondary School, where students participated in sessions on self-development and menstrual hygiene. Toluwaloju shared that her passion for empowering the girl child, combined with the NYSC’s motto of service and humility, inspired her vision. “I believe every girl can achieve greatness when given the tools and opportunities to thrive,” she stated.

Deborah Agbonika, founder of Akoni Care Foundation, was a keynote speaker at the event, delivering an inspiring address titled ‘Dare to Dream.’ She urged the students to define their purpose and remain determined in pursuing their dreams. “Your vision is the foundation for everything you can achieve in life,” she said, encouraging the girls to aim for excellence in their careers while aspiring for financial independence.

The initiative also emphasized menstrual health education, with corps member Odumuyiwa Ibukun Christianah leading an impactful session on hygiene practices and breaking taboos. She taught the students how to manage their menstrual cycles and maintain proper hygiene, stressing the importance of creating a supportive environment for open conversations. Over 400 sanitary pads were distributed during the sessions to further support the students.

Toluwaloju emphasized the comprehensive nature of ‘The Future Forward Project’, which addresses both the practical and emotional needs of the students. “By combining mentorship, education, and resource distribution, we are empowering these girls to overcome societal barriers and achieve their dreams,” she said. The project will continue with visits to three additional schools in Lokoja, broadening its reach and impact.

Toluwaloju hopes the initiative will inspire others to invest in the girl child, ensuring a brighter future for the next generation. “This is about building a generation of informed and purpose-driven young women who will shape their communities,” she added.
