A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving with the Kogi State Ministry of Education, Adebiyi Kehinde (KG 2462708), has organized a comprehensive Health and Wellness Outreach for staff of the ministry, students, and fellow corps members as part of her Community Development Service (CDS) project.

The event, which took place on Thursday, October 16, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Lokoja, had the theme: “Balanced Living: Integrating Nutrition, Self-care, and Mindfulness.” It featured health lectures by experts, a question-and-answer session, free medical consultations, and mild physical exercises aimed at promoting physical and mental wellness.

Declaring the event open, the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones, represented by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Barkisu Onozare, commended the corps member for her thoughtfulness and initiative. He described the outreach as a valuable platform for participants to evaluate, prioritize, and improve their overall well-being.

According to him, the Kogi State Government remains committed to supporting citizen-driven initiatives that empower people with the knowledge and tools necessary for healthier living.

In her welcome address, the organizer, Miss Adebiyi Kehinde, explained that the outreach was designed to enlighten the public on the importance of proper nutrition, self-care, and mental balance. She emphasized that a society that pays attention to wellness and healthy living is better positioned for productivity and development.

“Balanced living is not just about eating right; it’s about cultivating habits that enhance both body and mind. When we prioritize nutrition, mindfulness, and physical activity, we build stronger individuals and, by extension, a healthier nation,” she said.

Delivering a lecture on “Nutrition and Wellness,” Mrs. Dolapo Funmilola, Assistant Director of Nutrition at the Ministry of Health, highlighted the importance of a balanced diet in maintaining overall health. She explained the different classes of food and encouraged participants to adopt proper eating habits to prevent diseases and improve productivity.

Another guest speaker, Mr. Saka Lateef from Neolife Organization, spoke on the causes and prevention of common health challenges. He noted that dietary habits account for about 95 percent of cardiovascular-related diseases, stressing the need for individuals to make healthier food choices to prevent avoidable ailments.

On her part, Mrs. Fatima Usman, who spoke on “Mind Productivity,” explored the link between mental health, education, and personal output. She emphasized the need for individuals to maintain a balanced mindset for optimal performance in both academic and professional pursuits.

In his goodwill message, the Director of Food and Nutrition, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abel Sule, described the outreach as timely and impactful. He noted that the rise in unhealthy eating habits poses serious threats to intellectual growth and physical development, especially among students.

“Healthy living must become a priority within our schools. Teachers and administrators should ensure that our learning environments promote not just academic excellence but also sound nutrition and physical well-being,” he said.

Mr. Sule further commended the Commissioner for Education for his continuous efforts in promoting wellness initiatives across the education sector and applauded Miss Adebiyi for setting an example of meaningful community service.

The event concluded with free health checks for participants.
