EFCC’s Credibility Crisis: Yahaya Bello Pushes Back

Blessing Ele writes from Abuja

If the Lion does not learn to tell his story, the hunter will tell it for the lion, however he the hunter likes. And of course, we know who the story will glorify.

That is why I like very much what the Dangote Group is doing. For every time the NNPC has come to the public with twisted facts, the Dangote Group has been on toes to counter with actual facts, exposing the NNPC for the prevaricating institution we’ve always known them to be.

It is also for this reason that I like the route Former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has decided to take in his case with the EFCC. Media trial is no trial, but since the EFCC has decided to shamelessly engage in one, in an attempt to intimidate Bello and garner public sympathy with outright lies and twisted claims, I am glad Bello’s team is doing a good job at puncturing all their lies with hardcore evidence.

EFCC TALES SO FAR:

  • We arrested Bello in a midnight sting operation… no evidence, in fact, they’ve deleted the tweet
  • Bello came to our headquarters with top officials. We were pressurized by Tinubu and APC top officials to release him…. No evidence
  • Bello is not with us, he remains wanted… so who did they claim to have arrested and released initially?
  • We don’t like the manner in which Bello surrendered himself… this one is the funniest, and sadly so.
You mean you let someone you declared most wanted to walk into your headquarters and you let him go? Nigerians are asking, WHY?

BELLO’S TEAM

  • Bello honours EFCC’s invitation.. presents hardcore Evidence
  • Bello asked to go home without interrogation… presents hardcore evidence
  • suspected EFCC officials shooting sporadically at Kogi Government Lodge Asokoro, in a late-night attempt to forcefully arrest Bello… presents hardcore evidence covered by reputable media outlets.

What Bello is doing is pushing back against institutionalized impunity of power, where so-called independent authorities exploit force to trample on citizens’ fundamental human rights – a plight all too familiar to Nigerians.

Dear Olanipekun Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,
The EFCC is rapidly losing credibility under your leadership, and its reservoir of public trust is depleting at an alarming rate. Concerned citizens are urging you to eliminate media trials and ineptitudes and adhere to the dictates of your functions as provided by the Constitution.
