A former member of the Kogi State House of Assembly representing Bassa Constituency, Mr. Sunday Shigaba, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection ceremony was held at the Government House in Lokoja, drawing party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters who gathered to witness the political development.

Addressing the audience, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo commended the people of Bassa Local Government Area for what he described as their unity and leadership. He appreciated their commitment to peace and their support for his administration, particularly during the last governorship election.

The governor assured residents that the mandate entrusted to him would be upheld with a strong sense of responsibility. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the development of Bassa, highlighting the area’s abundant mineral resources and significant economic potential. According to him, sustained peace and unity would enable the people to maximize the benefits of their natural endowments.

Governor Ododo also described Mr. Shigaba’s defection as a bold and progressive step motivated by a desire to contribute meaningfully to governance and the advancement of his constituents. He emphasized that politics should prioritize collective progress over personal interests, noting that the era of self-serving political engagement was over.

The governor expressed satisfaction with the improving security situation in Bassa and urged stakeholders to maintain harmony, particularly in matters relating to community resources. He further assured residents that the township road in Bassa would receive government attention as part of ongoing infrastructure development efforts.

Appealing to the youth, Governor Ododo encouraged them to shun violence and destructive tendencies, instead positioning themselves as partners in development. He called on community leaders to provide responsible guidance and mentorship to young people.

In his remarks, Mr. Shigaba stated that although he had been a prominent stakeholder within the PDP, he chose to join the APC to better contribute to the development of Kogi State. He praised Governor Ododo’s inclusive leadership style, citing prompt salary payments and accessibility to the people as indicators of responsible governance.

Describing leadership as service-driven, Mr. Shigaba pledged his full loyalty to the APC and expressed readiness to support the governor’s administration and future political engagements.

The State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Bello, described the defection as a significant gain for the party, stating that Mr. Shigaba’s entry further consolidates the APC’s strength in the state. He urged the new member to remain committed to advancing the party’s progressive ideals.

In separate goodwill messages, the Chairman of Bassa Local Government Area, Mr. Theophilus Daruwana Adama, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders, welcomed Mr. Shigaba into the APC and reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining strong support for the governor in future elections.

The event was attended by former lawmakers, party executives, APC stakeholders from Bassa, and senior government officials, marking what political observers have described as a notable realignment within Kogi State’s political landscape.
