Gov Ododo’s Skills Acquisition Initiative: A Strategic Move Against Unemployment in Kogi State

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is proactively addressing unemployment in Kogi State through strategic investments in skills acquisition and vocational training. A notable initiative under his administration is the Ododo Youth Empowerment and Skills Acquisition Programme (OYESA), designed to equip youths with practical skills for self-reliance and economic contribution.
On November 18, 2024, OYESA was inaugurated with the goal of empowering young individuals through vocational training. By March 1, 2025, the program celebrated the graduation of 250 youths who had undergone comprehensive training at the Nigeria-Korea Friendship Institute for Vocational and Advanced Technology (NKFI). This institution is renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities and industry-relevant curriculum, ensuring participants receive quality education. Beneficiaries recieved comprehensive training in nine specialized fields of Automotive Mechatronics, CNG conversion, Welding and Fabrication, Plumbing and Fittings, Electrical installations and Repairs, Solar system installation and repairs, Computer hardware maintenance and repairs, Networking and Systems Security, CCTV installation, Photography and cinematography.
During the graduation ceremony, Governor Ododo reiterated his commitment to training a minimum of 1,000 youths annually in high-demand vocational skills by 2027, positioning Kogi State as a hub for technical expertise and innovation. By prioritizing skills over dependence on white-collar jobs, Governor Ododo is strategically addressing the rising unemployment rate, fostering entrepreneurship, and deliberately creating qualified manpower for industries and anticipated industrialization of the state through the revival of the Ajaokuta Steel company and ongoing construction of CNG facilities in the state, thereby reducing poverty. The provision of starter packs ensures that beneficiaries do not just acquire knowledge but have the necessary tools to start their businesses immediately.
According to the Nigeria Labour Force Survey Annual Report 2023 by the National Bureau of Statistics, the national unemployment rate stood at 5.4%. While specific figures for Kogi State were not detailed in the report, the state’s proactive measures, such as OYESA, aim to mitigate unemployment and underemployment challenges.
The emphasis on vocational training sits perfectly with global best practices, recognizing that technical skills are pivotal for economic diversification and resilience. By focusing on skills development, Kogi State aims to reduce youth unemployment, stimulate entrepreneurship, and foster a self-sustaining economy.
Governor Ododo’s vision extends beyond immediate training. The administration plans to continuously enhance the quality and reach of vocational programs, ensuring they adapt to evolving industry needs. This forward-thinking approach is expected to solidify Kogi State’s position as a leader in vocational education and a model for other states.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s strategic focus on skills acquisition through initiatives like OYESA proves a strong commitment to tackling unemployment in Kogi State. By empowering youths with practical skills and fostering an environment conducive to entrepreneurship, the state is on a promising path toward sustainable economic growth and development.
