Hon. Monday Anyebe Hails Kogi First Lady’s Leadership at “Walk Away from Drug Abuse” Campaign

The Kogi State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Monday Aridaojo Anyebe, has commended the First Lady of the state, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo, for her visionary leadership and commitment to youth development, following the successful hosting of the “Walk Away from Drug Abuse” campaign in Lokoja on Saturday.
The impactful awareness walk, organized through the Ohunene Empowerment Initiative, was powered by the Office of the First Lady as part of efforts to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse, particularly among young people. The event drew wide participation from community members, youth groups, civil society organizations, and key stakeholders, including representatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other allied bodies.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Anyebe expressed deep appreciation to Hajia Sefinat Ododo for spearheading what he described as a “bold, timely, and people-focused intervention” aimed at securing the future of Kogi youths. He noted that the First Lady has continued to play a pivotal role not only as a mother to the state but also as a beacon of hope and transformation.
“We are blessed in Kogi State to have a First Lady who goes beyond the ceremonial and actively drives change where it matters most among our youths and communities. Her Excellency’s tireless efforts, through initiatives like this walk, are creating safe spaces and reshaping narratives,” Hon. Anyebe stated.
The Commissioner further emphasized that the campaign aligns seamlessly with the broader development agenda of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, who has prioritized the health, safety, and empowerment of every citizen in the state. He added that addressing drug abuse is fundamental to achieving lasting peace, productivity, and prosperity in Kogi.
“As a government, we recognize that youth are the backbone of our society. That is why we will continue to partner with visionary leaders like Her Excellency and all relevant agencies to keep Kogi drug-free. Today’s walk is not just symbolic, it is a commitment in motion,” he added.
Hon. Anyebe reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to intensify collaboration with other ministries, agencies, and stakeholders in rolling out sustained sensitization and rehabilitation programs aimed at curbing substance abuse and restoring hope among vulnerable groups.
The “Walk Away from Drug Abuse” campaign ended with calls for community vigilance, responsible parenting, and strengthened institutional support to help those battling addiction and to prevent others from falling victim.
