Kogi Goes Green: Gov Ododo Backs NEWMAP-EIB to Fight Erosion, Flooding

The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has reaffirmed the state’s full commitment to the Nigeria Climate Adaptation, Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB), a major initiative aimed at tackling erosion, flooding, and environmental degradation across the country.
Governor Ododo, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, made the pledge on Tuesday during the official launch of the NEWMAP-EIB project at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. The project is supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and brings together federal and state governments, local government, and international partners in the fight against environmental challenges.
In his remarks, Governor Ododo commended the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for its strong commitment to environmental sustainability and the protection of livelihoods. He described the NEWMAP project as a landmark intervention that represents not just infrastructure but “a safeguard for our people, our agriculture, and our future.”

“Erosion and watershed degradation are not abstract problems; they are lived realities for millions of Nigerians,” Governor Ododo said. “They wash away farmlands and roads, displace families, and weaken food security. Through NEWMAP, we see a pathway to resilience and sustainable development.”
Highlighting Kogi’s unique vulnerability as the Confluence State, where Rivers Niger and Benue meet, Governor Ododo stressed that flooding and erosion continue to threaten farmlands, homes, schools, and healthcare centres. He assured that Kogi would fully support the project by mobilising communities, promoting sustainable land use, and applying lessons from the programme to strengthen resilience.

The Governor further called on citizens to take ownership of the initiative through tree planting, proper waste management, and collective responsibility for watershed protection. He also praised the European Investment Bank for its technical and financial support, while urging transparency and accountability in project implementation nationwide.
Governor Ododo concluded by reaffirming that NEWMAP is not just about fighting erosion but about safeguarding Nigeria’s heritage, preserving natural resources, and protecting the future of generations yet unborn.
