The Kogi State Government has announced plans to host the maiden Kogi Half Marathon in Lokoja, marking the first such event in the history of the state.

The announcement was made on Friday, January 9, 2026, by the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Aridaojo Monday Anyebe, during a press briefing in Lokoja.

According to him, the half marathon is scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 22, 2026, in the state capital.

Hon. Anyebe described the forthcoming marathon as a landmark sporting event designed to promote youth development, healthy living, sports excellence and tourism, while also showcasing Lokoja as a historic and emerging centre for sporting and recreational activities in Nigeria.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of the present administration to empower young people through sports, foster unity and position Kogi State as a destination for national and international sporting events.

The commissioner expressed gratitude to the Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for providing an enabling environment that has made the hosting of the marathon possible, particularly in the area of youth and sports development.

According to him, the Kogi Half Marathon will serve as a platform for youth engagement, talent discovery, economic stimulation and the promotion of peace and healthy lifestyles.

He added that athletes, sports enthusiasts, partners and visitors from across Nigeria and beyond are expected to participate in the event.

The race will feature both professional and amateur runners, with adequate safety, medical and traffic management measures put in place to ensure a smooth and successful outing. Cash prizes and other forms of recognition will be awarded to outstanding performers, while various side attractions are expected to add colour and excitement to the event for residents and visitors.

Hon. Anyebe also called on corporate organisations, development partners, sports bodies, enthusiasts and the general public to support and participate in the historic marathon, describing it as a reflection of Kogi State’s growing profile in sports development and youth empowerment.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Ododo-led administration to sustained development in youth and sports, alongside other critical sectors such as infrastructure and human capital development, expressing optimism that the government would continue to deliver on its promise of continuity and consolidation for the benefit of the people of the state.

The commissioner disclosed that further details on registration, race routes and other event activities would be made available in due course.
