Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission Engages Stakeholders Ahead of Market Launch

The Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) convened a stakeholders’ town hall meeting on Monday in Lokoja to discuss the upcoming launch of the state’s electricity market. The engagement aimed to foster collaboration and secure support from relevant stakeholders as the state prepares for this significant development.

The Electricity Act, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023, empowers states, companies, and individuals to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. In line with this, the Kogi State House of Assembly enacted legislation last year to establish the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission, ensuring the effective domestication of the Act within the state.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Rural and Energy Development, Engineer Mohammed Abdulmutalib, emphasized the importance of the engagement, describing it as a pivotal step toward improved electricity access for residents. He credited the state’s progress in energy regulation to the political will and support of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, who has a professional background in the energy sector.

Engineer Abdulmutalib reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strategic electricity regulation, assuring stakeholders that the administration prioritizes the welfare of citizens. He called for cooperation and support to ensure the provision of affordable, reliable, and high-quality electricity across the state.

In his remarks, the Chairman of KERC, Engineer Ibrahim Abdulwaaris, highlighted the significance of establishing a legal framework for the Commission. He noted that the commencement of the electricity market would attract further development to Kogi State.

Engineer Abdulwaaris outlined the agency’s core responsibilities, which include ensuring fair and transparent tariff structures, fostering public engagement, and providing a responsive platform for addressing electricity-related issues.

Several stakeholders at the town hall meeting commended the state government for its proactive approach in setting up the regulatory commission. They expressed optimism that the initiative would enhance electricity supply and drive economic growth in Kogi State.
