Kogi State Govt Allocates Over ₦7 Billion to Upgrade 88 Additional Primary Healthcare Centres
The Kogi State Government has committed over ₦7 billion to the revitalization of 88 additional Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state’s 21 local government areas.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo made this announcement during the official handover of project sites to contractors at the Model Primary Healthcare Centre in Felele, Lokoja. Represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, the governor stated that this initiative builds on the ongoing upgrade of over 70 PHCs, which are currently at various stages of completion following approval in March 2024.
Governor Ododo emphasized that the comprehensive revitalization project aims to upgrade more than 150 healthcare facilities to fully functional Level-2 health centers. This effort stresses the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare access and delivery across Kogi State.
He further explained that the healthcare facility upgrades are part of the state’s broader strategic plan to ensure quality healthcare services are accessible statewide, supported by funding from the World Bank.
“As we begin 2025, we are proud to launch the upgrade of 88 additional Primary Healthcare Centres, complementing the ongoing transformation of 70 PHCs into functional Level-2 facilities,” Governor Ododo stated. “This investment of over ₦7 billion, with invaluable support from the World Bank, reflects our dedication to achieving effective healthcare delivery and universal health coverage for our people.”
The governor expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing the health and well-being of Nigerians, particularly at the grassroots level. He also commended former Governor Yahaya Bello for establishing a strong foundation in the state’s health sector.
Governor Ododo urged contractors to uphold high standards of professionalism and complete the projects within the stipulated four-month timeline. He advised them to engage local government authorities and community stakeholders to ensure an inclusive approach that respects social and environmental safeguards during project implementation.
Additionally, the governor called on local communities to take ownership of the projects by safeguarding personnel, equipment, and completed facilities. He also directed relevant government bodies, under the supervision of the State Ministry of Health, to provide effective oversight throughout the execution of the projects.
