Kogi To Upgrade 17 Science Secondary Schools To Technical Colleges

Kogi State Government is to upgrade seventeen Government Science Secondary Schools to Technical Colleges to promote vocational studies and skill acquisition.

The Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Wemi Jones made this known in a message to a one-day training on providing career guidance for Final Year Students, Principals and School Counsellors organized by development Research and Project Centre dRPC in Collaboration with the Ministry of Education Science and Technology in Lokoja.

The Education Commissioner who was represented by an Assistant Director in the Ministry, Mrs. Regina Ogbodo said the new technical colleges will be added to the existing four in the state.

Mr. Jones noted that with the development, there will now be one Technical school in each of the Local Government Areas in the state.

He noted that the move became imperative following the need for Nigeria education system to provide self reliant and employable youths.

The Programme Manager of development Research and Project Centre, Barrister F. Fadili said the essence of the training was to enlighten Students, Carrier Counsellors, School Principals and th society on the need to embrace technical and vocational education.

In a presentation titled; “Guidance and Counselling for Students in Vocational and Technical Schools” a Guest Speaker, Mr. James Akodi identified vocational and Technical Education as the only way to the development of the country

Mr. Akodi also stressed the need for stakeholders to create enabling environment for teaching and learning, adding that examination misconduct must be properly curtailed.

Some of the students who participated in the exercise noted with delight that the training will build confidence in them towards achieving self reliance.
