Kogi Youths and Sports Commissioner Receives House Committee on Sports on Oversight Visit

The Kogi State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Hon. Monday Anyebe on Tuesday recieved members of the Kogi State House of Assembly Committee on Sports to his office during an oversight visit aimed at assessing the state’s sports infrastructure and programs.

The committee, led by Hon. Daku Sunday, expressed keen interest in understanding the progress and challenges within the sports sector, particularly focusing on how it impacts the youth.

Speaking during the meeting, the Commissioner, Hon Anyebe provided a comprehensive briefing on the current initiatives undertaken by her ministry to promote sports and youth engagement across the state. He highlighted several key programs, including the renovation of the Confluence stadium, interventions on the state’s football clubs (Kogi united and Confluence Queens), implementation of community sports programs, and partnerships with private organizations to support talent development. He emphasized the importance of sports in fostering unity and providing opportunities for young people in Kogi State.

“The Ministry is committed to creating an environment where our youths can thrive through sports.” Our goal is to harness their potential and provide platforms where they can showcase their talents, which in turn can open doors to national and international opportunities.” he said.

The Commissioner highlighted several challenges identified upon assumption of office in February this year, all of which he said has been tabled before the governor of the state, Alhaji Usman Ododo for action.

He commended the House Committee for their visit, expressing confidence that they’ll help amplify their concerns towards achieving set goals for the sports sector of the state.

On his part, the committee chairman, Hon. Daku Sunday, Commended the efforts of the Commissioner for his efforts so far in office. He noted that the Committee’s visit wasn’t to witch-hunt but to seek ways to collectively improve the sports sector of the state.

“It is evident that the Kogi State government is making significant strides in the area of sports development. We are impressed with the initiatives in place and are committed to supporting these efforts to ensure sustainable growth in sports and youth engagement.”

Members of the Committee, Hon. Usman Ochidi, representing Dekina/Biraidu constituency; Hon. Seyi Bello, representing Kabba-Bunu constituency; and Hon. Jibril Abu representing Ajaokuta State Constituency in their separate remarks provided recommendations on how to further enhance sports development in the state. They urged the ministry to continue its efforts in creating inclusive programs that reach youths in rural areas and to seek more partnerships that can bring additional resources and expertise.

They assured that the visit was in line with the mandate of the eight assembly toward strengthening the collaboration between the legislative body and the state government to prioritize youth and sports development, ensuring that the young people of Kogi State have access to the opportunities they need to succeed.
