Like Bello, Like Ododo: Lessons from the Omala Visit

Written by Blessing Ele-ojo

There is no gainsaying that effective leaders prioritize their people’s safety and security above all else. Evidently, former Governor Yahaya Bello and incumbent Governor Ododo Ahmed Usman of Kogi State exemplify this commitment by the decisive actions they take in the face of security challenges.

Governor Ododo’s recent visit to troubled Omala LGA, where communal clashes have become rife, mirrors former Governor Bello’s bold visit to Oganenigu Ward of Dekina LGA in 2018, in defiance of the potential risks involved. In both cases, both leaders stood firm in their mission to protect lives and property, despite security threats from notoriously dangerous territories.

The former Governor’s swift response to the Oganenigu conflict which resulted in loss of life and agricultural shortfall, showcased prompt action and determination. His prompt implementation of measures to bring perpetrators to justice and curb further violence additionally demonstrated a strong commitment to community protection and justice.

In the same vein, Governor Ododo’s visit to Bagaji-Odo, Agojeju-Odo, and Bagana in Omala LGA offers hope in challenging times. By personally connecting with residents, community leaders and stakeholders and pledging to facilitate a Forward Operation Base for the Nigerian Army at Omala border, he has shown compassion and decisive leadership, bringing renewed hope to affected communities.

The parallels between both leaders’ styles are striking, not just in their responses to security threats but in their overarching vision for a safer and more prosperous Kogi State. Despite risks, their shared commitment to the well-being of the people remained a priority for the former governor and remains a priority for the current governor in every policy, visit, and decision.

It is noteworthy that former Governor Bello’s leadership has left an indelible mark on Kogi State, a legacy that Governor Ododo carries forward with compassion and excellence. Their collective focus on security and proactive governance sets a high standard for public service, embodying servant leadership and prioritizing the people’s safety and needs.

As Governor Ododo marks his first 100 days in office, Kogi State rests in safe hands, with takeaway from the Omala visit being that Kogi residents can be assured of steadfast, proactive, and determined leadership in the face of any adversity.
