NSF: “Kogi Athletes Welfare Our Top Priority”, Commissioner

The Kogi State Government has reacted to the recent protest by some of its athletes at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Ogun State, stating that all necessary arrangements were made ahead of the tournament to ensure the welfare and success of Team Kogi.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Honourable Monday Aridaojo Anyebe, while addressing journalists in Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, on Thursday, clarified that funds were duly sourced and released to officials from the Ministry to cater to the needs of the athletes and coaching crew.

Honourable Anyebe emphasized that he placed a high priority on the welfare of all athletes and directed relevant officials to ensure that all entitlements were disbursed appropriately.

“I understand the frustration of some of our athletes, and I sincerely apologize for any mix-up that may have occurred. However, I want to make it clear that I personally ensured the release of funds and gave clear instructions that everyone should receive what is due to them,” the Commissioner stated.

He noted that while he cannot be physically present in all places at the same time, he has been actively on ground in Ogun State monitoring the progress of Team Kogi and ensuring that ministry officials are up and doing in their responsibilities.

“Since the commencement of the festival, I have been here with our athletes and I have taken steps to ensure their comfort and performance. If there were any administrative lapses, they will be promptly addressed,” he added.

Responding to calls for his resignation by protesting athletes, Anyebe dismissed the notion, stressing that his focus remains on implementing Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s vision of building a strong and sustainable sports sector in Kogi State.

“Our vision under the leadership of Governor Ododo is clear; develop grassroots sports, support our athletes, and place Kogi on the national sporting map. I am fully committed to that cause and won’t be distracted,” he stated.

He further assured the athletes and coaching crew that all pending concerns will be resolved swiftly and transparently.

The Commissioner’s reaction follows a protest by some athletes who alleged non-payment of allowances and poor treatment. The athletes, including medalists, staged a demonstration at their camp in Babcock University, demanding the immediate resignation of Honourable Anyebe.

While investigations into the alleged mix-up continue, the Ministry has reiterated its commitment to ensuring athletes are well catered for and that such lapses, if any, are corrected moving forward.
