Super Eagles Legends Mourn Christian Chukwu, Salute Legacy of Peace and Patriotism

The Super Eagles Legends of Nigeria have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former national team captain and coach, Christian Chukwu, who died on Friday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 74.

In a heartfelt condolence message issued by Dr. Hassan Abdulrahman, National Coordinator of the Super Eagles Legends of Nigeria, on Tuesday, the group described Chukwu as a towering figure in Nigerian football whose impact extended beyond the pitch into the very soul of the nation.

The legends have an account of Chukwu’s career noting that popularly known as “Chairman,” Christian Chukwu captained the Nigerian national team to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980, an achievement that remains a landmark in Nigeria’s sporting history. His leadership, the Legends said, was defined by discipline, patriotism, and commitment to the unity of the nation.

They said beyond his playing days, Chukwu coached the Super Eagles from 2003 to 2005, leading the team to a third-place finish at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations. He also managed the Kenyan national team and Safa FC of Lebanon, demonstrating a career-long passion for the development of African football.

According to the doctor, Chukwu was not only a football legend but also a symbol of peace and unity. “He joined the Super Eagles Legends in a nationwide campaign to promote peace, unity, and the progress of our great nation. He believed that football could be used to heal wounds and bring people together,” the statement read.

Chukwu’s resilience and national service were also highlighted in the message, especially during his health crisis in 2019 when he received financial support from philanthropist Femi Otedola and was named a Life Ambassador by the Nigeria Football Federation in recognition of his lifetime contributions to Nigerian football.

The Super Eagles Legends extended their deepest condolences to Chukwu’s family, friends, and the wider football community, stating that his legacy would remain a guiding light for future generations of Nigerian athletes.

“Christian Chukwu’s life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and his legacy an eternal inspiration. Nigeria has truly lost a hero,” Dr. Abdulrahman added.

Chukwu’s funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by his family.
