Two Years in Office Like Four Years Already: A Journey of Faith, Perseverance and Transformation »

I am delighted to share that today marks two years since we assumed office. To say that this journey has been easy or enjoyable would not be truthful; however, through divine support, unwavering determination, and a commitment to leave a lasting impact, we have navigated the challenges we faced. The Nigeria Korea Friendship Institute, which I encountered two years ago, has undergone significant transformation into a globally recognized technical institution, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the government, governing council, management, and staff.

One of the primary hurdles that the nine-year-old institution faced was the lack of accreditation for its courses. We approached the former governor, assuring him that, should funds be made available, we could secure accreditation promptly. True to his character, Alhaji Yahaya Adoa Bello allocated the necessary funds for our accreditation in December 2023. Without delay, we engaged the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and within fifteen days, after a rigorous evaluation, our institution received full accreditation—achieved a month later, marking seven years since its establishment and less than one year and three months into my tenure as rector.

Given the constraints of time, I will highlight some of our notable achievements over the past two years:

Increased student enrollment by 150%.
Launched the institute’s first-ever website, establishing a global online presence.
Repaired and rebranded four large billboards to promote the institute, with visible results.
Revamped the institute’s infrastructure, enhancing the learning environment and staff efficiency.
Registered the institute on the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) portal/CAPS.
Developed an online portal to facilitate academic activities, including result accessibility and course registration.
Introduced remote and long-distance learning programs in Cybersecurity, AI, and Robotics.
Launched new vocational programs on-site, including AI and Robotics, photography, cinematography, fashion design, and Gas Turbine Operations.
Strengthened campus security by hiring eight private security guards.
Signed over ten Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with institutions such as KSP, CUSTECH, and the African Development Study Centre (ASDC) to foster mutually beneficial partnerships.
Established a borehole water supply system for the institute.
Installed air conditioning systems across the institution, including administrative offices and lecture halls.
Acquired a large petrol generator to support student practicals due to the inefficiency of AEDC.
Integrated the institute’s staff into the tertiary institution salary scale.
Created the Directorate of Student Services (DSS) for smooth management and students relationship
Upgraded the Automotive Mechatronics program from a Certificate program to a 2 years National Diploma program
Achieved full accreditation for all of the institute’s programs.
Successfully conducted the 3rd and 4th Matriculation/Orientation ceremonies for the 2022/2023 academic year after a prolonged hiatus.
Developed a PC Trainer simulator capable of diagnosing various computer faults.
Received approval from NBTE for the transition to a Monotechnic.
Awarded scholarships to talented Kogi indigenes who are currently fabricating a Tesla Cybertruck.
Ensured timely and prompt payment of salaries for ad-hoc staff, with no outstanding dues.
Established NKFI Consultancy Services to manage private business operations on behalf of the institute.
Procured two brand new grass-cutting machines.
Installed CCTV cameras throughout the campus, including two solar-powered outdoor systems with alarms, significantly improving security.
Converted and fully furnished two offices previously used as storage to provide a better working environment for staff.
Renovated and equipped the security post of the institute.
Acquired essential security equipment such as walkie-talkies, handcuffs, metal detectors, and stun guns for the security unit.
Computerization and automation of the institute’s staff and student records (currently in progress).
Created Directorate of Linkage and Advancement.
Converted Academic Affairs unit to Academic Planning Unit directorate.
Created Industrial Cooperation Unit

I would also like to take this opportunity to announce the following:

The commencement of Part-Time program (Friday-Saturday) at the institute, effective November 2024, which will include National Diplomas in:

Computer Software Engineering
Networking and Systems Security
Welding and Fabrication
Automobile Mechatronics Engineering
Library and Information Technology
Transport System Engineering

The launch of the NKFI Obajana part-time center starting in November 2024.
The Late Prof. Idowu M. Ajibero Memorial Lecture scheduled for October 2024, featuring a paper presentation, the launch of the Prof. Ajibero Foundation, the awarding of fellowships to deserving Kogi indigenes, and unveiling NKFI’s strategic plan.

I would like to express my gratitude to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for his commitment during the visit of KOICA’s Country Director to provide the institute with suitable hostel accommodations. In the spirit of Oliver Twist, we will continue to seek further support from His Excellency, trusting in his capacity to provide additional classrooms and office space. My sincere appreciation also goes to the Secretary to the Government of Kogi State, Pastor (Mrs.) Ayoade Folashade Arike, PhD, for her unwavering support always. She is always available to NKFI morning, afternoon and evening, we owe a lot to her, We also want to appreciate the Chief of Staff, Alhaji Ali Bello for his continued support for our institution as well as to my Commissioner, Hon. Wemi Jones, who has been exceptionally in the advancement of education in our state has been evident, and we are grateful for his efforts in championing initiatives that benefit our state.

Furthermore, I would like to acknowledge the contributions of friends of NKFI and stakeholders who have played a pivotal in our existence as an Institute by sponsoring students to this institute. Topmost is HRM Maigari of Lokoja for his commitment and vision for educational development. We appeal to well meaning Nigerians to get youth off the streets and sponsor them to Nigeria Korea Friendship Institute, to sharpen and positively channel their ability to the advancement of technological breakthroughs.

To our partners, the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Korean Government, we say a big thank you for not giving up on NKFI. Your steadfastness and commitment to a friendly world has brought us this far. I want to use this medium to appeal to you for 2024 intervention.

As we move forward, we remain optimistic about the possibilities that lie ahead. The support from His Excellency and the government will undoubtedly pave the way for improvements in our educational infrastructure, thereby enhancing the learning experience for our students. Together, we can create an environment that fosters growth, innovation, and excellence in education.

In closing, let us continue to work hand in hand, united in our mission to uplift our educational institutions and empower the next generation. Thank you once again for your support and dedication to this noble cause.
