SSA student matters to Gov Bello quells unrest in Kogi Poly resulting from death of student by accident
In what can be described as a proactive decision of the Senior Special Assistant to Kogi State Governor on Student Matters, Comrade Isah Babangida Onimisi, as a result of the rage shown by students of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja following the death of their colleague who was knocked down by a car in an accident, he has been able to quell the rising tension.
The students had barricaded the road and prevented all vehicular movements in the area on the popular Felele Road, just by the school gate, with emotions overrunning as they dared anyone to ply the road since the accident which occurred late hours of Tuesday evening.
On getting wind of the information, the SSA quickly swung into action by visiting the area where he met with and had a fruitful discussion with the student leaders of the institution who barricaded the road.
He appealed to them to allow for free flow of traffic, assuring them of his preparedness to make a special case on the matter before Governor Yahaya Bello, who he described as a listening leader.
Comrade Babangida urged them to show restraint even in the face of anger, saying that anyone in their shoes would also be angry, but promised that the portion of the road causing the mishaps would be attended to by the Governor.
He enjoined the students to be calm as he would personally take up the issue and see that something urgent was done to avert a reoccurrence of the sad situation by addressing the problem of potholes in the area.
The SSA used the opportunity to prevail on the Rector of the institution, Dr Usman Ogbo, in whose presence the students demanded the reopening of the back gate, which the SSA intervene and pleaded for, for which reason the request was granted.
Comrade Babangida used the occasion to urge the state government to construct bumps around the gate to avert such mishaps that have continued to claim lives of Students.
The SSA then used the opportunity to also add his voice in form of appeals as directed by government, that management of the institution allow students that have not paid their school fees to sit for their exams in view of the current economic crunch in the country, with assurances from erring students to defray the bills when resources are available.
