Super Lions of Onzo successfully defend White Lions Cup; defeat Girinya FC 2-0
The Super Lions of Onzo have again retained the 2020 White Lions Cup by beating Girinya Football Club by two goals to nil.
The finals of the match was played on Sunday at the Community Secondary School in Gegu – Beki, Kogi Local Government Area of Kogi State was an entertaining encounter.
It took the Super Lions 33 minutes to break the deadlock which meant they punished the Girinya Boys for their wastages in the Opening minutes where they lacked cutting edge in the final third despite their trickery and finesse in both the midfield in on the flanks.
Yahaya Toure, wearing the number seven jersey released a strong strike which aimed and got the top left of Girinya goalie, Alex Enock which sent the stadium into a frenzy as the Lions went in front.
A careless play in the box in the 65th minutes gave the leading team the opportunity to put the game beyond their opponent through the penalty spot and they didn’t miss.
Girinya, which ended the match with a man deficit, could not find the right response to the attacking and defensive prowess of the Super Lions as the match ended 2-0.
Speaking after handing winners and deserving other deserving players their trophies, the competition’s organiser and commissioner for solid mineral and natural resources, Engr Abubakar Bashir Gegu reiterated his determination to discover talents from the area to represent the state and the county at national and international competitions.
He said the area was blessed with talents, hence the need to harness them, discourage the youths from lives of crime and preach about the unity being espoused by Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.
The Commissioner prophesied that the competition will soon have a name change again, to be called GYB2PYB from next year to accentuate the call for Governor Bello to contest for the country’s presidency, adding that the country deserved a visionary, peaceful, security conscious, articulate, loving and caring leader like Governor Yahaya Bello.
In their separate remarks, the Chairman of the council who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Comrade Gimba Yakubu; the SSA to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Idris Aliyu; an Abuja based public servant, Hon Usman Ibrahim and others, all lauded the Commissioner for his love for sport and commitment to positive youth engagement, noting that it had taken the minds of the young ones off criminality.
