Nigeria At 62: Gov. Bello Charges Corps Members on Fostering National Unity

In the high spirits of the 62nd anniversary of Nigeria’s independence marked nationally today Saturday, 1st October 2022, Corp Members in Lokoja in a display of patriotism and unity that the scheme has espoused in 49 years, embarked on a Unity March aimed at developing national ethos among Nigerians, anchored on patriotism, selfless service and commitment to national development. The unity March to mark this year’s independence day enjoins Nigerians to keep the flames of love and oneness burning as they look forward to better days.

Governor Yahaya Bello at the Muhammad Buhari Square in Lokoja, commended the efforts of Corps members and the entire NYSC management team in embarking on a unity march to strengthen Nigeria’s unity.

Governor Bello who was represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Pharmacist Abdulkareem Jamiu Asuku, in his charge urged corps members to abstain from all vices that will incite hatred and impede Nigeria’s growth as a country as it turns 62.

Asuku thanked governor Yahaya Bello for always setting the pace especially in promoting the ideals that fosters unity among tribes, cultures and religion. He commended the management of NYSC for providing a platform such as this for the unification of Nigerians across all tribes, particularly in Kogi state.

He urged corps members to demonstrate a high level of discipline and to play a pivotal role in unifying Nigeria while charging them not to be induced with money, especially during the fast approaching 2023 elections.

Pharm Asuku, while recounting the efforts of heroes who had sacrificed their lives for the betterment of Nigeria, emphasized on the need for youthful energy to be channelled towards the development of the country and having the right attitude that will foster unity among Nigerians.

Citing Anthony Enahoro’s contributions that led to Nigeria’s independence in 1960 at the age of 21, Asuku urged Corps members to strive to positively impact Nigeria’s development even at their young ages.

He recounted the obstacles that led to the formation of Nigeria and noted that with the right attitude from the youths, Nigeria will continue to remain united. He enjoined corps members to shun tribal, cultural and religious segregation and other social vices but to champion the course that will lead to a more unified Nigeria.

“I implore you to sustain a high level of discipline and enthusiasm even as you have demonstrated so far, especially by remaining compliant with the NYSC rules and regulations. You must continue to distance yourselves from cultism, drug abuse and other social vices because the future of Nigeria depends on you the teaming youths.” He said.

Earlier, The Special adviser to the Governor on youths and students matters, Hon. Jibrin Oludare, In his address thanked the Almighty God for His undeserving grace upon the country in the last sixty-two years. He appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari, Gov Yahaya Bello, the Management of NYSC and leadership at other levels, as well as all Nigerians for keeping faith in the evolution of the country despite its challenges.

He extolled Corps members for their doggedness in taking up the unity march most especially on independence day, adding that as a country blessed with abundant natural, material and human resources, Nigeria is destined to be great and can certainly do better if citizens put their acts together by continuing to embrace unity in diversity, justice and equity against the temptations to do otherwise, commonness of purpose despite individual preferences, and galvanizing the country’s competitive and complementary individual talents to strengthen of collective goals as a country.

The state Coordinator of NYSC Kogi State, Pastor Mrs, Mofoluwaso Adebimpe Williams, represented by Mr Abdullllahi B. S thanked governor Yahaya Bello for his support to the management of NYSC, especially in the enhancement of unity which has been one of the major tenets of the Corps. Mr Abdullllahi thanked corp members for championing the course of unifying the nation through their unity march and congratulates all Nigerians at home and in the diaspora particularly, Kogites on the auspicious occasion of the country’s independence day anniversary.

In his vote of thanks, the Commissioner of Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo, said nothing defines Nigeria more like Kogi State, especially with its strategic location and the history that brought Nigeria into existence. He called on Corps members and well-meaning Nigerians to continue championing the course for a more Unified Nigeria.
