From Lawmaking to Lifesaving : Idah Rep, David Zachariah, Sets Standard for Effective Leadership and Grassroots Development

Arnold H. Glasow once said, “One of the tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency.” For the people of Idah Federal Constituency in Kogi State, one of the few leaders who has consistently passed this test is Hon. David Zachariah, the ever-dedicated member representing the constituency in the Green Chamber of Nigeria’s National Assembly.
Hon. Zachariah, a quiet achiever and a consummate real estate entrepreneur, has redefined leadership since his first election into the House of Representatives in 2019. His rise to national legislative prominence was not accidental but a testament to his deep understanding of grassroots challenges and his commitment to purposeful leadership and people-centered development.
As a federal lawmaker, Hon. Zachariah has diligently carried out the core responsibilities of legislation, oversight, and representation—three vital pillars that underpin effective democratic governance. He has been actively involved in proposing, debating, and passing critical bills aimed at addressing national challenges, improving governance, and enhancing the welfare of Nigerians, particularly his constituents. As a firm believer in the power of good governance, he has consistently participated in the rigorous process of national budget reviews to ensure government spending is properly aligned with national development priorities.
In the area of legislative oversight, Hon. Zachariah has proven himself as a committed patriot who understands the importance of holding the executive accountable. Through his active membership and leadership in several committees, he has been instrumental in monitoring the activities of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), ensuring transparency, efficiency, and strict compliance with the law. Currently serving as Chairman of the House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, Hon. Zachariah has leveraged his extensive experience to champion safety regulations across critical sectors, ensuring that government agencies maintain high operational standards that protect lives and properties.
However, in the Nigerian context, what often defines a lawmaker’s true connection to his people is his ability to attract tangible developmental projects to his constituency—an area where Hon. Zachariah has excelled remarkably. He has remained a solid bridge between the people of Idah Federal Constituency and the federal government, ensuring that the needs, yearnings, and aspirations of his constituents are not only heard but addressed at the national level.
Education remains one of his topmost priorities, and his intervention in this sector speaks volumes. Hon. Zachariah has facilitated the construction of well-equipped classroom blocks across several communities such as Ofakaga, Ejule, Idah, and Avrugo. His personal educational foundation has awarded scholarships to over 5,000 students at all levels within the constituency, while over 1,000 secondary school students have received financial support to cover their WAEC and NECO examination fees. Furthermore, his annual distribution of free JAMB forms and educational materials has greatly reduced the financial burden on parents and students, contributing significantly to the reduction of out-of-school children in the area.
In the healthcare sector, Hon. Zachariah has been nothing short of a beacon of hope. He has facilitated the renovation and equipping of cottage hospitals in communities like Aloma and Ejule, giving residents access to quality healthcare services and essential medical supplies. His efforts have strengthened the health infrastructure within his constituency, ensuring that basic healthcare is accessible to even the most rural communities.
Security and environmental sustainability have also enjoyed significant attention under his stewardship. In a bid to improve security, enhance socio-economic activities, and promote cleaner energy, Hon. Zachariah facilitated the installation of over 2,000 solar-powered streetlights in strategic locations such as Sabon-Gari, Achadu Road, the Palace in Idah, as well as remote communities like Oko-Okenyi and Ojuwo Ajomachi. These interventions have not only illuminated the night but have also enhanced safety and reduced crime rates across the constituency.
The age-long challenge of access to clean and potable water has also been decisively tackled by the lawmaker. Through the construction of over 30 motorized boreholes across communities like Ejule, Idah, and Unwajala, Hon. Zachariah has brought much-needed relief to thousands of households, saving women and children the daily struggle of fetching water from contaminated sources.
His humanitarian response in times of natural disasters, especially during the devastating floods that affected many parts of his constituency, further demonstrated his empathetic and responsive leadership. Hon. Zachariah did not just stand by as a spectator; he ensured the prompt delivery of relief materials, offering succor to victims and restoring hope to the affected communities.
On the legislative front, Hon. Zachariah has also proven to be a proactive policy advocate. Beyond sponsoring and supporting key motions, he has consistently championed issues of national interest, including security, economic empowerment, and social welfare. Notably, he was deeply involved in the boundary demarcation debate, particularly the case involving Ezeagwu in Aguleri, Anambra State, and Odeke-Ibaji in Kogi State—an indication of his commitment to peace, justice, and equity for his people.
As his legislative journey continues, Hon. David Zachariah stands tall as a textbook example of what true representation means in a democracy. His leadership is a shining reminder that the role of a federal lawmaker goes beyond politics; it is about development, advocacy, and being the voice of the people.
Through his exemplary service, he has restored faith in governance among his constituents and set a new standard for what it means to be a representative of the people. Idah Federal Constituency can proudly say it has a leader who listens, acts, and delivers.
