Canada Senate passes bill approving gender neutral Anthem

By Omolade Olorundare

The Canadian Senate has passed a bill making the country’s national anthem a gender neutral one.

The Bill which was sponsored by Late senator, Mauril Belanger passed its third reading in the senate on Thursday Night after passing through Canada’s House of commons in 2016 and spent 18months under debate in the Senate, and also faced opposition from a fraction of conservative party members.

The passing of the bill changes the phrase “True patriot love in all thy sons command” in the national anthem to “True patriot in all of us command”.

Following its passing by the Senate, the Bill will now receive royal assent from the Governor General before it becomes law.

“O Canada” became canada’s national anthem in 1980, and since then changes to the lyrics have been proposed several times and this is the first time such a proposal has been successful.
