As part of the activities to commemorate Democracy Day, The Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has officially flagged off the 2017 Grassroots Food and Social Security Programme with the distribution of rice at the Lokoja Local Government Secretariat with a call on the people to defend democracy at all times.

The Governor commended Nigerians for their courage and resilience in the defence of democracy despite challenges. He said Nigerians have never stopped believing and aspiring for the greatness our nation is entitled to, saying that every time Nigerians voted, it was always in search of a leader who would deliver the dividends of democracy to the people; and a succession of leaders have come and gone and they have contributed their quota to democracy at different periods.

Governor Bello said the food distribution which cuts across the twenty-one local government areas of the state in all the polling units is aimed at putting food on the people's table, adding that the programme will be sustained to periodically meet the needs of the people.

He said the 'New Direction' administration may be less than fifteen months in office but his administration has shown its intention to serve the people of the state with good conscience and the fear of God, and has paid more attention to the direct welfare of the people than previous governments, as appointees have always been mandated at each festive season to visit their constituencies with items for distribution.

The Governor noted that the present administration under him has tamed the widespread of insecurity of lives and property, kidnapping, armed robbery, and other crimes which were inherited, explaining that in line with the New Direction Blueprint, government has increased the tempo and plans for accelerated development in all constituencies and assured that his government will continue to work to strengthen democracy through the provision of good governance and the delivery of the dividends of democracy to the people.

Governor Bello stressed that President Muhammed Buhari has successfully battled tremendous odds to guarantee security and destabilise corruption in his effort to revitalise the economy which is beginning to bear fruit as the country gradually walks out of recession and prayed to God to bless the president with good health and strength in his quest to pilot the affairs of the country to a greater height.

Earlier, the Lokoja Local Government Administrator, Shehu Lawal expressed appreciation to the governor for his efforts in bringing succour to the people in such a time, saying that over five thousand, two hundred and fifty Kogites will benefit from the distribution in the one hundred and five polling units of the local government.

Shehu Lawal commended the governor for giving adequate attention to the issue of security and the overall infrastructural development of the state, noting that the state capital is beginning to wear a new look as there are street lights and the roads are now in good shape.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Engineer Abubakar Ohere said the programme as designed by the Governor is to ensure the downtrodden is carried along and not restricted to party affiliation, adding that the action of the governor is an indication that he knows the needs of the people and is always ready to proffer solution.
