Kogi group commends FG for charging Melaye over alleged false assassination claim against Onoja

A political group in Lokoja has commended the Federal Government for preferring charges against Senator Dino Melaye for allegedly giving false information against the Chief of Staff to the Kogi State Governor, Edward Onoja.

Senator Melaye who represents the Kogi West Senatorial District at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly is being charged by the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation for allegedly lying to the police that the Chief of Staff had made assassination attempt on his life on April 17, 2017 at his country home in Ayetoro Gbede.

The Kogi Integrity Group (KIG) who made the commendation in a statement issued and circulated among media houses in Lokoja on Sunday, said that the FG’s decision would serve as “a warning to politicians that are in the habit of blackmailing their opponents.”

The statement which was signed by the President of the KIG, Barrister Zacchaeus Dare –Michael, urged the office of the Attorney -General of the Federation to pursue the case to a logical conclusion.

It also condemned Melaye’s incessant attack on the person and administration of Gov. Yahaya Bello and urged him to stop giving the State a bad image.

The group called on the indigenes of the State both at home and abroad to rally round the state government in its efforts to provide democratic dividends for the people.

It also described the Chief of Staff to the governor, Mr Edward Onoja as a God fearing man who could not hurt a fly, let alone attempting to take the life of a fellow human being.

The statement commended the police for doing a thorough investigation into the matter and for absolving Onoja of the “frivolous and unfounded allegation.”

The Federal Government had in a suit number CR/106/18 filed before a federal high court in Maitama, Abuja on January 31, accused Melaye of giving a false information to police on assassination attempt on his life.

The suit filed by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) alleged that Melaye falsely accused Onoja  of being behind the assassination attempt on his life at Ayetoro – Gbede, Kogi State on April 17, 2017.
