NYSC Members Organise Entrepreneurship Programmes for Kogi Youths

Entrepreneurship programme that could “motivate and empower” graduates in Kogi State to be self-employed was organised yesterday in Lokoja by corps members serving in the state capital.

The two-day programme, according to the members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), was to expose the teeming unemployed youths in the state to trades that could make them self reliant.

The Organising Manager, Mr Charles Osagie, told InsideStory that the “Young Entrepreneur Exhibition and Expo Programme”, which was organised for the first time in the confluence city, was to mobilise the youths to understand that they could be successful working independently.

Mr Osagie, a corps member himself, said “the program is the first in Kogi state and it is organised to solve the problem of unemployment. We see entrepreneurship as solution to the problem. In other civilised climes, entrepreneurship is used as key to human development. Nigeria cannot be an exception. We must key in to put unemployment problem to rest permanently.”

He added that the programme was to give Kogi youths the “platform to showcase their businesses, connect with entrepreneurs in other states in order grow in small and medium scales businesses.”

He expressed happiness about the success of the programme in Lokoja, saying “the turn out can’t be compared to other industrialized states like Lagos, Rivers, Kano and Benin, but the response in Kogi state was not really bad and can get better if the programme continues.”

The convener of the project, Corps Member Sorishola Bode said the programme was to bring youths together “to enable us to drive home the entrepreneurship spirit amongst them and encourage them to share their entrepreneurship ideas.”
