Ayokanmi Quarter Residents in Kabba Metropolis Appeal to Governor Ododo Over 4-Week Blackout, Seek New Transformer

Residents of Ayokanmi Quarter, by Silver Valley College opposite Specialist Hospital in Kabba, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, have appealed to Kogi State Governor, Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo, for urgent intervention over a power outage that has lasted four weeks.

The community said the only transformer serving the area collapsed in mid-June, throwing homes, businesses, Silver Valley College, and the Specialist Hospital axis into total darkness.

Speaking on behalf of the residents, community leader Chief Olugbemi Femi said several complaints to the distribution company had yielded no result.

“For 4 weeks now, Ayokanmi Quarter has been in darkness. Students of Silver Valley College cannot study at night, and businesses around the Specialist Hospital are collapsing because we depend on expensive generators,” he said.

They noted that the area is densely populated because of the college and the hospital, and that the outage is affecting learning, healthcare delivery, and livelihoods.

The residents, in an open appeal, called on Governor Ododo to direct relevant agencies to urgently replace the faulty transformer and restore electricity to the community.

“Your Excellency, we believe in your commitment to infrastructure and the welfare of Kogi people. We are pleading that you come to our aid and ensure a new transformer is installed for us without delay,” they said.

Other residents lamented the economic hardship caused by the blackout, saying the cost of fueling generators has become unbearable for traders, artisans, and parents.

As of press time, officials of the electricity distribution company were yet to comment on the matter.
