Democracy Newsline to Launch ALEMD Initiative for African Leaders
Democracy Newsline Newspaper plans to launch the ALEMD initiative to promote engagement among African leaders, the media and diplomatic institutions.
Democracy Newsline Newspaper, published by Michabifem Ventures Limited in Nigeria, has unveiled plans to launch the African Leaders’ Engagement on Media and Development (ALEMD) initiative to strengthen dialogue between African leaders, the media and diplomatic institutions on governance and continental development.
The ALEMD initiative will seek to facilitate exclusive interviews with African presidents and heads of government, providing a platform for discussions on leadership experiences, government policies, national challenges and development priorities.
The proposed continental programme, championed by the newspaper’s Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Chief Olugbemi Femi, will also engage diplomats, policymakers, business leaders and other stakeholders on issues affecting Africa’s political and economic development.
With the theme, “Connecting African Leadership, Media and Diplomacy for Continental Development,” the initiative aims to improve communication between African governments and international audiences while promoting discussions on governance and development.
Speaking on the initiative, Femi said it was conceived to strengthen connections between African leadership and the international media, particularly in documenting the continent’s development efforts, leadership experiences and investment opportunities.
He explained that African countries have development programmes, policy achievements and economic opportunities that deserve greater attention from international audiences.
According to him, the media has a responsibility beyond reporting political developments, including encouraging accountability, facilitating dialogue and strengthening communication between governments and citizens.
A major component of the ALEMD initiative will involve planned presidential interviews focusing on governance philosophies, policy achievements, national challenges and the development priorities of participating countries.
The newspaper intends to publish the interviews across its print, online and digital platforms, alongside other international media channels, to reach audiences within and outside Africa.
The programme will also seek to encourage discussions on democracy, economic transformation, security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, youth empowerment, investment opportunities and regional integration.
Beyond presidential interviews, Democracy Newsline plans to engage diplomatic missions, African regional institutions, international development organisations and other stakeholders to explore opportunities for media cooperation and diplomatic engagement.
Other proposed activities include an African Development and Governance Dialogue, an African Leaders’ Media Diplomacy Tour and international media visibility programmes.
The organisation also intends to explore initiatives recognising contributions to governance, diplomacy, humanitarian services and continental development.
As part of its initial activities, Democracy Newsline will approach selected African presidential offices to seek approval for exclusive interviews and establish institutional relationships that could support the programme’s implementation.
The statement did not specify a launch date or confirm arrangements for any presidential interviews.
The newspaper’s board and management expressed optimism that the ALEMD initiative would encourage responsible journalism and provide opportunities for African leaders to communicate their development priorities to wider international audiences.
The organisation further disclosed plans to extend the programme’s engagement beyond Africa through interactions with international leaders, diplomatic institutions, investors and development partners interested in the continent’s growth.
Femi said the long-term objective was to establish a sustainable platform connecting African leadership, media organisations and diplomatic stakeholders in addressing shared development challenges.
The initiative is being developed by Democracy Newsline Newspaper, a publication of Michabifem Ventures Limited, Nigeria.
