Electoral Integrity in Nigeria: A Compelling Case for INEC-ASUU Collaboration

The Nigerian electoral system has been beset by a plethora of challenges, including fraud, rigging, and irregularities, which have eroded citizen trust and undermined the legitimacy of democratic outcomes. The 2019 general elections, for instance, were characterized by widespread allegations of vote-buying, ballot box snatching, and result manipulation, prompting vociferous outrage and disappointment on social media platforms.

In response to these electoral malfeasances, observer groups and civil society organizations have consistently advocated for comprehensive electoral reform, emphasizing the imperative of appointing impartial and competent returning officers. In this regard, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) emerges as a strategic partner, possessing the requisite expertise, integrity, and impartiality to conduct free and fair elections.

Rather than INEC appointing ASUU members directly, a more efficacious approach would be for INEC to collaborate with the ASUU body in the appointment of returning officers. This partnership would foster a sense of accountability and oversight, enabling ASUU to ensure that its members uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

The INEC-ASUU partnership offers several salient advantages, including enhanced electoral credibility, transparency, and accountability. ASUU can vet and select members with impeccable records, provide training and guidance, and discipline members who engage in electoral fraud or malpractice.

By collaborating with ASUU, INEC can effectively address the concerns of Nigerians who have lost faith in the electoral process. This partnership constitutes a critical step towards rebuilding trust and ensuring that elections reflect the true will of the people.
