The 2022 floods have been confirmed as Nigeria’s worst flood disaster, and as predicted by the National Meteorological Agency (NIMET), the flood would affect some states in Nigeria. However, Following the release of water from the Lagdo dam in Cameroon and other dams in Nigeria, Kogi state has been severely impacted by the ravaging flood, which has taken over many communities in the state.

Gov Yahaya Bello while addressing residents of Kpata and Adankolo communities on his visit to the area sympathised with victims of the flooding. He expressed deep concern over the level of devastation and suffering that is being visited on the people by the rising floodwaters.

Bello noted that water overflowing the banks of river Niger and Benue in the last decade has become a recurring disaster that has plagued the state starting from 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2022 becoming progressively worse than those of 2012 and 2018. Adding that it has become pertinent for all stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the problem.

The governor assured all those affected by the flooding that they are not alone and that help is coming. He therefore assured residents of the communities of providing affected persons with shelter at various Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camps, as well as security, food, medicines, clothing and cash grants for necessities, among others while gearing up efforts towards more sustainable solutions where possible. He directed the Local government chairman and chiefs to ensure that all residents are enrolled into the Bello Care program to ensure proper care for all.

Gov Bello noted that to avoid further occurrences, some communities will be relocated to higher grounds and structures which fall into the designated areas that needs to be worked on to avoid recurring floods will have to make way. He assured all that the government will ensure proper resettlement and rehabilitation of those who will be affected. He noted that although this will put huge burdens on the resources of the government but it will be money well spent if it brings peace of mind to our people.

Accordingly, Gov Bello made a passionate appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, The World Bank, public-spirited individuals, groups and International bodies to assist Kogi state government through donations of funds and other essentials to cushion the effect of the floods ravaging the state.
