Hon. Mukadam (Asiwaju) Asiru Idris: A Life of Service, Fiscal Excellence and Compassionate Leadership
In every generation, there are leaders whose influence is not measured by the volume of their voices but by the depth of their impact. They build institutions, inspire confidence, transform lives and leave enduring footprints on the sands of time. Hon. Mukadam (Asiwaju) Asiru Idris, FCA, the Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, is one of such leaders.
Renowned for his calm disposition, financial expertise and strong commitment to public service, Asiru Idris has, for nearly a decade, remained one of the most influential figures in Kogi State’s governance. His remarkable journey from a humble beginning in Yagba land to becoming one of the state’s longest-serving commissioners is a testament to hard work, discipline, competence and an abiding passion for service.
Humble Beginnings and Academic Excellence
Born on December 22, 1975, in Isanlu, Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State, Asiru Idris was raised with the values of integrity, diligence and community service. He attended AUD Primary School, Bagido, Isanlu, before proceeding to St. Kizito’s College, Isanlu, where he distinguished himself academically.
Driven by an unrelenting desire for knowledge, he obtained a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in Economics and Mathematics before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Accounting from Kogi State University (now Prince Abubakar Audu University).
A thoroughbred financial professional, he is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN). Before venturing into public service, he built an impressive career in the banking sector, rising through the ranks at Zenith Bank to become a Branch Manager, a position that sharpened his leadership and financial management skills.
Steering Kogi’s Financial Transformation
Since his appointment as Commissioner for Finance in 2016, Asiru Idris has become one of the principal architects of Kogi State’s fiscal reforms. His outstanding performance earned him the confidence of two successive administrations, making him one of the few commissioners retained to continue driving the state’s economic policies.
Under his supervision, Kogi State has recorded significant improvements in public financial management, budget planning, fiscal discipline and accountability. He has played a central role in strengthening budget implementation processes, enhancing transparency in government finances and promoting prudent management of public resources.
His stewardship has also contributed to Kogi State’s impressive performance in national fiscal transparency and accountability programmes, positioning the state among Nigeria’s leading performers in public finance reforms. Through strategic planning and sound economic policies, he has helped create an enabling environment for infrastructure development, agricultural expansion, improved healthcare delivery, educational investments and other critical government programmes.
Working closely with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, Asiru Idris continues to provide the financial leadership required to sustain the administration’s development agenda and ensure that public resources are deployed efficiently for the benefit of the people.
A Loyal Pillar of the APC
Beyond government, Asiru Idris has established himself as a respected leader within the All Progressives Congress (APC). Over the years, he has remained a dependable grassroots mobiliser, trusted adviser and loyal party stalwart whose influence extends across Kogi State, particularly in Kogi West.
Known for promoting unity, consultation and inclusive leadership, he has consistently supported the party’s vision while contributing to its electoral successes through strategic mobilisation and engagement with party members at all levels. His politics is widely regarded as one of service, accessibility and bridge-building, earning him respect across political divides.
Perhaps one of the most admirable aspects of Hon. Asiru Idris’ public life is his deep commitment to humanitarian service.
Away from the corridors of power, he has quietly touched countless lives through acts of generosity that rarely attract media attention. From sponsoring the education of indigent students to providing medical assistance for the sick, supporting widows, empowering young entrepreneurs and assisting vulnerable families, his philanthropy has become a source of hope for many.
His interventions have helped young people pursue their dreams, enabled small businesses to grow and strengthened communities through support for religious organisations, community development initiatives and youth empowerment programmes.
