Ahmed Usman Ododo announces the renaming of Kogi State Specialist Hospital after former governor Ibrahim Idris.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo announced the renaming of Kogi State Specialist Hospital in Lokoja as Ibrahim Idris Specialist Hospital on October 29, 2026.

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has renamed the Kogi State Specialist Hospital in Lokoja as Ibrahim Idris Specialist Hospital in honour of former governor Ibrahim Idris, popularly known as Baba Ibro.

Ododo announced the decision on Thursday, October 29, during the 40th-day prayer for the late former governor in Abejukolo, Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State. He said the renaming was in recognition of Idris’ contributions to the development of the state.

“Therefore, as the Chief Servant of Kogi State, I am pleased to announce that the Kogi State Specialist Hospital in Lokoja will henceforth be renamed Ibrahim Idris Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, in honour of this distinguished former Governor and in recognition of his contributions to the development of our dear state,” Ododo said.

The governor explained that the decision reflected his administration’s commitment to preserving the legacies of leaders who contributed to Kogi State’s development, adding that their contributions should remain visible to present and future generations.

Ododo also called on residents to promote unity across political, ethnic and religious divides, noting that the gathering brought together people from different backgrounds to honour the late former governor.

He said the gathering demonstrated Idris’ ability to build relationships across divisions and urged the people of Kogi State to embrace their shared identity and common destiny.

According to the governor, division weakens communities, while unity provides a foundation for collective progress.

Earlier, the chairman of the organising committee for the 40th-day prayer, Musa Amodu, thanked Ododo for supporting the arrangements for Idris’ burial and the commemorative prayer.

Amodu said the governor had continued to support the former governor’s family following his death, including providing financial assistance for the burial arrangements and fully sponsoring the 40th-day prayer.

Ibrahim Idris governed Kogi State from May 29, 2003, until January 2012 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He won the March 2008 re-run election and became one of the state’s longest-serving governors. He remained influential in politics and business after leaving office.

Idris died in the United Kingdom on September 20, 2026, aged 77, following an illness. He was buried on September 25, 2026, at Gudu Cemetery in Apo, Abuja.

The renaming of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital in Lokoja places his name on a major public health institution in the state he governed for nearly nine years.
