No Going Back on Senator Natasha’s Recall – Kogi Central Group

A coalition of concerned stakeholders from Kogi Central Senatorial District has initiated the process of recalling Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the National Assembly. The group, under the banner of Kogi Central Political Frontiers, cited her recent suspension from the Senate and her alleged failure to prioritize the interests of her constituents as key reasons for their decision.
Chairman of the group, Kamal Jafar Ehira who spoke on behalf of the group at a press briefing held in Lokoja on Thursday said the stakeholders expressed disappointment over Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension by the Senate for what they described as “gross misconduct and unruly behavior.” They acknowledged the Senate’s decision as a necessary step to uphold the institution’s integrity, emphasizing that the rules guiding legislative conduct must be respected.

The group criticized the senator for refusing to apologize to the Senate, a condition they claim could have led to a reconsideration of her suspension. They argued that her continued absence from legislative duties would leave Kogi Central without representation for six legislative months, effectively silencing the district’s voice in national affairs.
Furthermore, the stakeholders took issue with Akpoti-Uduaghan’s decision to take the matter to international platforms, such as the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting, where she reportedly framed her suspension as an issue of gender-based harassment. They also condemned her legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and others, viewing it as a personal pursuit rather than a defense of her constituents’ interests.

“For the record, after her suspension, there has been no formal communication between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and the people of Kogi Central, not even a town hall meeting,” the statement read.
The group maintains that her refusal to apologize or seek alternative means of resolving the issue is a clear indication that she is neglecting her mandate. As a result, they have resolved to begin the process of recalling her from the Senate.

“We believe that the people of Kogi Central deserve a responsible, law-abiding representative who understands the importance of teamwork in governance,” the statement concluded.
The move marks a significant political development in Kogi Central, as the recall process, if successful, would lead to a fresh election for the senatorial seat.
