Nigerian Bar Association asks for immediate suspension of DSS Boss

The Nigerian Bar Association has called for the immediate suspension of the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, in respect of the style used in the rearrest of Omoyele Sowore in court premises.

DSS officers stormed the Federal High Court to arrest Sowore on Friday.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu was forced to abandon sitting and judicial duties for the day by the court attackers.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kunle Edun, the NBA said it was “greatly frightened by the DSS agents ‘ show of primitivity, thuggish, mad zeal for lawlessness, contempt and disregard for the rule of law.”

The country’s lawyers ‘ body also said it considered it disgraceful that this ‘trial chaos’ caused by the high-handedness and insensitivity of the security officers disrupted the judicial proceedings and made the presiding judge leave the legal proceedings due to security concerns.

NBA advised President Muhammadu Buhari to ’ensure that the Federal Government and its agencies have complied with court orders,’ as the show of ’DSS contempt for the court is legendary and unrivaled’

The organization called on all Nigerians to stand up and ensure that the country’s constitution was not discretion by any government or any of its agencies.

“We call for the immediate suspension of the Director-General of the Department of State Security from office.

“We make this demand bearing in mind the fact that the DSS under his leadership had established itself as a brutish and irresponsible agency that derives immense pleasure from violating the fundamental rights of Nigerians and disrespecting court orders.

“The National Assembly should review the laws setting up the DSS and indeed all security agencies in Nigeria with a view to repositioning them to be more responsible and responsive to the public.”
