Deeply concerned by the health condition of an infant who is ailing from Gastroschisis (Omphalocoele) or anterior abdominal wall, the Pharmacist Abdulkareem Asuku Youth Empowerment Foundation has pledged to foot the surgery bill which is aimed at correcting the birth defect and give the infant a chance to live a healthy life.

The baby born to Mr/Mrs Abdulrahaman Dauda have been in the SCBU unit of the hospital for almost one month.

This was made known on Thursday during the visit of the founder of PAAYEF, Pharmacist Abdulkareem Jamiu to the Federal Medical Center, Lokoja where he also offset the incurred medical bills by the parent of the infant.

Gastroschisis(Omphalocoele) or anterior abdominal wall defect as explained by medical practitioners is a birth defect where a hole in the abdominal (belly) wall beside the belly button allows the baby’s intestines to extend outside of the baby’s body. The hole can be small or large and sometimes other organs, such as the stomach and liver, can be found outside of the baby’s body as well.

“Gastroschisis occurs early during pregnancy. The hole is usually to the right side of the belly button. Because the intestines are not covered in a protective sac and are exposed to the amniotic fluid, they can become irritated, causing them to shorten, twist, or swell”.

While making further commitments, the PAAYEF founder, Pharm. Asuku assured that other future bills incurred in the process of getting the infant to wellness and full recovery would be taking care of by the foundation.

While commenting, the focal person for PAAYEF, Sandra Mimi Musa pointed out that although although the foundation was renowned for its several medical Outreach, this particular situation touched the founder and the team deeply hence the foundation prompt response to the infant’s predicaments.
