Sen. Jibrin Echocho Appointed Chair of Adhoc Committee Investigating Nigeria’s Refinery Rehabilitation Contracts

Senator Isah Jibrin Echocho has been appointed as the chairman of an adhoc committee tasked with the crucial responsibility of investigating the contracts awarded for the rehabilitation of Nigeria’s state-owned refineries. These refineries have remained non-functional for an extended period, despite numerous repair efforts conducted under various Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) contracts. Alarmingly, these repairs have incurred a staggering cost of N11.35 trillion over the course of 13 years.

The adhoc committee comprises esteemed members, including the chairpersons of the committees on Petroleum Resources (Downstream, Upstream, and Gas), Finance, Appropriation, and Public Accounts. These distinguished individuals have been granted a time frame of four weeks to compile and submit their comprehensive report.

Furthermore, the committee’s mandate extends to interrogating key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), and the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE).

This development signifies a critical step towards addressing the longstanding issue of non-functional refineries in Nigeria and brings hope for potential solutions to enhance the country’s energy and economic landscape. The nation eagerly anticipates the findings and recommendations of the committee in its quest to revitalize the energy sector.
