With wide margin, Dino Melaye loses senate seat
The senator representing Kogi West Senatorial district in the national assembly, Dino Melaye has suffered a great defeat as he lost his reelection big to his age long rival, Smart Adeyemi in the just concluded senatorial election.
Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the Kogi West Senate seat with 88,373 votes.
Adeyemi, a former senator, defeated his closest rival Dino Melaye of the PDP, who scored 62,133 votes.
The Returning Officer for the election, Lawal Olajide announced the results on Saturday in Kogi.
Smart Adeyemi defeated the incumbent, Sen Dino Melaye with a 26, 240 vote margin.
Dino Melaye won the Senate seat on the platform of the APC in 2015, but defected to the PDP along with the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and others.
Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the senate election conducted on November 16th inconclusive because the margin between Mr Adeyemi and Mr Melaye was lower than the number of registered voters in the 53 polling units canceled in the zone.
The victory of Smart Adeyemi has increased the number of APC senators from Kogi State to three.
