Says INEC lacks the logistics to conduct Direct Primaries
Kogi State Governor, Yahaha Bello has submitted that the Independent National Electoral Commission does not have the funding and manpower required to conduct direct primary election across the country noting that such exercise would further strain the Nation’s economy.
Governor Bello while speaking on Channels Tv’s Politics Today on Wednesday similarly added that putting a constitutional restriction on the type of primary election to conduct would be putting the nation’s democracy in a tight corner by constitutionally taking away alternatives.
He expanded that the fund that would be required by the Electoral umpire to run direct primaries across the nation would be needful in other very germane aspect of the nation adding that restrictions to direct primaries would extinct multi party system in the polity
The governor asserted that the drafters of the All Progressive Congress constitution proposed the adoption of a suitable option if a particular mode was not applicable in the state causioning that law making should not be based on the impulse of the moment
Governor Bello asserted that no governor was afraid of direct primary election as it was a suitable test of popularity reiterating that leaders should always be sincere when taking decisions.
Governor Bello stated that under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, a committee was set up headed by the Vice President, Prof.Yemi Osibanjo to always address any topical issue that would affect the country which was performing credibly well
He noted the All Progressive Congress through its bottom up approach have taken the party closer to the people recalling that in the just concluded congresses those elected were totally the freewill of the people as party members were given the free hand to select their representative.
