PDCRC to Provide Free Legal Aid to Over 25 Unconvicted Inmates At Koton-Karfe Custodial Centre
The Public Defender and Citizens’ Rights Commission (PDCRC), has announced its commitment to providing free legal representation for more than 25 unconvicted inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe.
This initiative was unveiled during an advocacy visit led by PDCRC’s Director-General, Ibrahim Onogu Esq.
The Koton Karfe Custodial Centre, designed to house 320 inmates, currently holds 238 individuals. Of these, 217 are awaiting trial, many without any legal representation.
The Director-General of PDCRC, Ibrahim Onogu Esq., stated that this intervention is aligned with the commission’s broader mandate, particularly the implementation of the Kogi State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law, 2022 (VAPP Law). The PDCRC aims to ensure that justice is served, especially for the indigent and vulnerable individuals who lack the means to secure legal counsel.
Testimonies from the inmates highlighted the severe consequences of prolonged detention without legal representation. Among the cases, Mr. Samson Ifeanyi, who was detained after unknowingly transporting illegal substances hidden by a relative, has been languishing in custody as his case moves forward in the Federal High Court without legal support. Similarly, Mohammed Ibrahim, a miner accused of murder, has been in custody since September 12, 2023, without legal representation, despite his assertions of innocence.
Other cases include Mr. Saidu Ibrahim and Mr. Saidu Haruma, who were arrested on charges of cattle theft and have remained in detention, unable to understand the charges against them due to the absence of legal counsel.
In response to these troubling situations, the PDCRC has committed to providing legal representation to over 25 inmates, ensuring that their rights are protected under the VAPP Law.
Salisu Musa, the Officer- in-Charge at the custodial centre, expressed gratitude for the PDCRC’s timely intervention, acknowledging that this support would significantly impact on the lives of these inmates. He also lauded the commission’s ongoing dedication to extending legal services to those most in need.
This initiative represents a significant step towards ensuring that justice is accessible to all, particularly those who are indigent and vulnerable, by upholding their legal rights and securing fair representation in court.
