Yahaya Bello Media Office Accuses EFCC of Witch-Hunt in Ongoing Case

The Media Office of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of conducting a politically motivated campaign against the ex-governor. In a statement issued earlier today by the Director General, Michael Ohiare, the office alleged that the EFCC is acting on the orders of unnamed interests to tarnish Bello’s reputation.

The statement described the EFCC’s recent press release as a “badly scripted” and “embarrassing” response, filled with “vulgar invectives,” aimed more at maligning the former governor than pursuing genuine anti-corruption efforts. Yahaya Bello’s media team argued that the anti-graft agency has shown bias in its handling of the case, citing the former governor’s voluntary visit to the EFCC headquarters, which the commission later downplayed.

The media office also criticized the EFCC’s conduct during an attempt to arrest Bello at a state governor’s official lodge, calling it reckless and unnecessary since Bello had previously spent over four hours at the EFCC office.

They further questioned the motives of the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, implying that his actions are driven by personal interests or pressure from powerful individuals. The statement also reiterated that Yahaya Bello remains innocent until proven guilty by a court of law and accused the EFCC of repeatedly disregarding court orders in its actions against him.

The media office called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order an investigation into the EFCC’s handling of the case, suggesting that the commission’s actions risk undermining the President’s anti-corruption agenda. They also expressed gratitude to the Kogi State House of Assembly for voicing support for the former governor and urged Nigerians to remain vigilant about the situation.

The statement concluded by reaffirming that Yahaya Bello is committed to defending himself through legal means and will not succumb to what they described as the EFCC’s “desperate hatchet job.”
