Respect for Traditional Institutions Non-Negotiable, Says Ododo
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State has called on political actors and stakeholders to uphold the sanctity of traditional institutions, stressing that respect for royal fathers must remain sacrosanct, irrespective of status or position.
The Governor made the call on Tuesday at the Conference Hall of Government House, Lokoja, while receiving a delegation of traditional rulers from Yagba West Local Government Area led by Oba J.J. Falope.
Governor Ododo described traditional rulers as vital partners in governance and grassroots development, noting that their roles as custodians of culture and peace make them indispensable in decision-making processes.
He emphasized that the institution of traditional leadership must be respected and preserved, highlighting its role as a critical link between government and the people.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with traditional institutions to promote inclusive governance, peace, and sustainable development across the state.
He further underscored the importance of consultation with elders and community leaders, particularly on political matters, noting that their experience and guidance are essential for stability and progress.
On issues concerning zoning arrangements in Yagba West, the Governor stated that while political stakeholders had initiated discussions, his administration would await formal recommendations from elders before taking a definitive position, in line with his commitment to participatory governance.
Governor Ododo also revealed that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently emphasized the need for leaders to engage and respect traditional rulers, assuring that his administration would continue to align with that directive. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to security, infrastructure development, and inclusive governance, while urging stakeholders to promote unity, mutual respect, and collaboration for the overall progress of Kogi State.
Earlier, speaking on behalf of the delegation, Oba Falope commended the Governor for his inclusive leadership style and sustained engagement with traditional institutions. He described the visit as a strategic step toward strengthening ties between Yagba West and the state government, while pledging the continued support and cooperation of the people.
The monarch reaffirmed the loyalty of Yagba West to the Governor and assured him of unwavering backing for his administration and future aspirations.
He also lauded the administration’s developmental strides in the area, citing improvements in infrastructure, increased political inclusion, and consistent government presence as impactful achievements.
Oba Falope further acknowledged ongoing security interventions, including the deployment of personnel and enhanced surveillance, which he said have significantly improved safety in the region.
On political matters, the traditional rulers reiterated their support for continuity in governance and advocated for the retention of the senatorial seat within Yagba West.
The delegation also expressed appreciation to former Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello for his contributions to the development of the area and the strengthening of traditional institutions.
In their separate remarks, the Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Olusegun, and the Chairman of Yagba West Local Government Area, Hon. Tosin Olokun, commended the Governor for promoting unity and fostering strong partnerships with the people, pledging their continued support for his administration’s development agenda.
