Kogi Power Rotation Advocacy Gains Momentum as Maigari of Lokoja Endorses Initiative
The campaign for an equitable power rotation framework in Kogi State has received a significant boost following the endorsement of the initiative by the Maigari of Lokoja, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambo Kabir Maikarfi IV.
The monarch expressed his support during a visit by members of Kogi Unity Accord, a socio-cultural and political advocacy group promoting equitable power and resource distribution across the state. The group said it is mobilising public support for a proposed bill that seeks to establish a constitutional framework for equitable power sharing in Kogi, drawing inspiration from the federal character provisions of the 1999 Constitution.
Leading the delegation, public policy advocate and political activist, Omoluabi Bode Adeyemi, said the campaign was driven by the need to find lasting solutions to what he described as recurring political struggles over power that have strained relationships among Kogi’s ethnic groups.
According to him, the state’s 36-year democratic journey has been marked by ethnic suspicion, political rivalry and disagreements that have undermined unity and development.
Adeyemi said traditional and religious leaders have a critical role to play in ensuring the success of the advocacy, expressing confidence that their neutrality and sense of fairness would help shape a framework capable of promoting lasting peace.
He described the initiative as a defining moment in the state’s political history, adding that it offers an opportunity to build a more inclusive governance system for future generations.
Responding, the Maigari of Lokoja commended the promoters of the initiative for what he described as their patriotism and foresight.
He urged them not to be discouraged, expressing optimism that history would remember their efforts positively.
The traditional ruler said an equitable power rotation arrangement would strengthen peace, unity and development in Kogi State.
He also expressed confidence that the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo would provide an enabling environment for constructive discussions on the proposal, citing what he described as the governor’s integrity, courage and commitment to good governance.
The delegation included senior government officials and other stakeholders who, according to the advocacy group, support the immediate consideration of the proposed framework for equitable power distribution in the state.
