Advocacy group promises to monitor construction of class room blocks for primary school in Kogi state

An advocacy group, Connected Development (CODE), has promised to monitor the construction of blocks of classroom in Kogi State through its Follow the Money Initiative.

The group made the promise recently at Zango-Daji in Adavi Local Government Area, during the recent launch of the Follow the Money Initiative Campaign.

Programme Director for the Non Governmental Organization, Busayo Morakiyan said the body advocates, tracks and visualizes funds meant for projects in Nigeria’s rural areas.

The Director said its education campaign in Kogi State through a Town Hall meeting with stakeholders of the Local Government Education Authority Primary school in Zango-Daji Community of Adavi Local Government.

He said the Follow the Money Initiative which was launched in a Town Hall meeting was geared towards assembling all relevant stakeholders to discuss the ongoing renovation and construction of class blocks in LGEA Primary school, Zango-Daji, for improved service delivery, effective public oversight and strengthening of community ownership for the sustainability of the project.

The Programme Manager further noted that the meeting with students, staff, community leaders and other stakeholders provided an opportunity to address issues that may come up in the tracking process and get citizens of the community fully involved.

InsideStory reports that in the course of the discussion, the Programme Manager recommended School Based Monitoring Committees (SBMC) to strengthen the resolve of the community and to demand for better services.

On the status of the project, Mr. Morakiyan emphasised the need for financial data for the community to have information about the actual project amount, bills of quantities and contractor details for effective oversight.

Also speaking, the Research Assistant for Connected Development in Kogi State, Mr. Umar Danasabe Mohammed noted that the Follow the Money Initiative will provide all technical expertise and support available to ensure the project was well executed.

On his part, the Community Leader of Zango-Daji Community, Comrade Abdullahi Rabiu said the lack of synergy between the community and authority concerned has made it difficult to challenge contractors, stressing that a School Based Monitoring Committee will be set up immediately.
